Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a
national-level scholarship/fellowship program conducted to promote and
encourage highly driven students to opt for research careers in basic science
courses. It is initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology
of the Government of India. Students who qualify KVPY, known as the KVPY
fellows, receive a monthly scholarship up to pre-Ph. D. level.
The KVPY exam is administered by the
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc). Candidates who qualify for the
aptitude round are called for a face-to-face interview. About 3000 out of one
lakh aspirants are awarded the KVPY fellowship.
What is KVPY Fellowship?
KVPY fellow is entitled to receive the monthly
stipend pre Ph.D. level or 5 years, whichever is earlier, given that he
maintains the minimum grade every year.
- From the second year of
B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat /Integrated M.Sc./Integrated M.S. program, KVPY
fellows must participate and perform satisfactorily in a summer program in
an academic Institution of National or International repute or a DSIR
approved research lab. This is mandatory for the continuation of
fellowship.
- KVPY Fellows are issued an
identity card that grants them access to national universities and
laboratories that have agreed to extend special privileges like lab
facilities, libraries, etc.

are eligible to appear for the aptitude test. They must produce a study
certificate of class 11 once they are selected as a provisional KVPY
fellow.
The fellowship of such candidates will only be deemed eligible if they opt to pursue an undergraduate course in Basic Science (B. Sc./B.S./B. Stat./B. Math./ Int. M.Sc./ Int. M.S. ) in the academic year 2023-24 after having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST & PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in class 12 board exams.
- SX - Candidates must be studying
Science stream in class 12 during 2021-22 academic year and aspiring to
join undergraduate program in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B. Stat./B.
Math./ Int. M.Sc./ Int. M.S.) for the session 2022–23. They must secure a
minimum of 75% in Math and Science subjects in class 10th board exams (65%
for SC, ST, and PWD). To avail of the scholarship, the candidates must
secure a minimum of 60% (50% for SC, ST, and PWD) in Science subjects in
class 12th board exams to be eligible for the fellowship
- SB - Due to the current outbreak of
COVID-19, as an exceptional measure, candidates who have passed class 12
exams and are eligible to enroll in the 1st year of B. Sc./B.S./B.
Stat./B. Math./ Int. M.Sc./ Int. M.S. during the academic year 2021–22, are

KVPY Exam Pattern:
KVPY is conducted in two rounds - Aptitude Test and
Personal Interview. While the aptitude round checks a candidate's knowledge
across various subjects, the interview process will test knowledge of science
and research-related topics.
- Exam Mode: KVPY is essentially a computer-based
test (CBT). So, you can only take it in the online mode.
- Question Type: Questions are of multiple choice type (MCQs).
Each question has an equal weightage of marks. For SA Stream, it is
compulsory to attempt all questions. However, for candidates of SB/SX
stream, there is an option to attempt any three sections in PART I &
any two sections in PART II.
- Exam Duration: Candidates are given 3 hours to complete
the paper.
- Language for Question Paper: A candidate has the option to take the
paper in English or in Hindi.
- Marking Scheme: The question paper is divided into two
parts. In part 1 of the test, candidates are awarded +1 and -¼ for correct
and incorrect answers respectively. For part 2, candidates are awarded +2
and -½ for correct and incorrect answers respectively.
