1.       India won 15 medals including five gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals on day 10 of the Commonwealth Games 2022. India’s medal tally reached 55 with 18 gold, 15 silver and 22 bronze medals.

 

2.       The Monsoon Session, 2022 of the Parliament which commenced on Monday, the 18th of July, 2022 has been adjourned sine die on Monday the 8th of August, 2022. The Session provided 16 sittings spread over a period of 22 days. Total number of Bills passed by both Houses of the Parliament during the Session is 5.

 

3.       The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, laid the foundation stone of the Indo-Israel Center of Excellence for Vegetables in Chandauli (Uttar Pradesh) through video conferencing. The technology for the Center is provided by Israeli experts under the India-Israel Action Plan (IIAP).

 

4.       Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will e-launch the onboarding of cooperatives on the GeM portal in New Delhi. With this, all eligible cooperatives will be able to start placing orders on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal.

 

5.       The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹2.33 crore on Spandana Sphoorty Financial Limited, Hyderabad for non-compliance with certain provisions of the 'Non-Banking Financial Company - Systemically Important Non-Deposit taking Company and Deposit taking Company (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2016”. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

 

6.       US President Joe Biden has signed documents endorsing Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO alliance. Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in response to Russia's military actions in Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly warned both countries against joining the alliance.

 

7.       The Indian Army has conducted a major pan-India exercise codenamed Skylight to test the operational readiness and robustness of its hi-tech satellite communication systems in the event of an attack by an adversary. The Army activated all its satellite communication assets spread from Ladakh to Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the Skylight exercise.

 

8.       Nagasaki Day is observed on 9 August. On this day US dropped an atomic bomb on the Nagasaki city of Japan in 1945 during World War II. The first bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima and the second was dropped on Nagasaki on 9 August. The devastation caused due to the bombing led Japan to surrender in World War II.

 

9.       In Colombia, the first leftist President was sworn into office. Mr. Gustavo Petro was a former member of Colombia’s M-19 guerrilla group, won the Presidential Election in June by beating conservative parties.

 

10.   The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is celebrated on 9 August every year. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations. The theme of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples for the year 2022 is "The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge".
