Mushrooms are fungi, having a plant-like appearance with a stem and cap. Their cell wall is mainly composed of chitin, glycoproteins, and glucans. A study from the University of the West of England by Professor Andrew Adamatzky (2022), who explored the electrical activity of four species of fungi through categorization and using algorithms, found clusters of spikes to resemble human speech and a vocabulary of up to 50 words. Tiny electrodes were used to measure electrical spikes. The transmission of information takes place from fungal roots termed mycelium. The study suggested that electrical signals are similar to signals sent by the human nervous system. The rate of impulse for the generation of these signals was found to be raised when communicating for resources or injury (other environmental transitions) among distant parts of themselves or with hyphae-connected trees. The four fungi included were enoki, split gill, ghost, and caterpillar fungi, where split gill produced the most complex sentences of them all. The average length of a single word was 5.97 letters, compared to 4.8 letters per word in the English language, indicating fungal consciousness. The direct relationship between these spike patterns and human speech is not confirmed, but striking resemblances to human languages have been observed. Other pulse behaviors have been seen earlier in fungi, but these are rhythmic patterns similar to nutrient pulses.
There are reports suggesting communication not only in mushrooms but in plants as well. Parasitic weeds were reported to utilize mRNA-based language to communicate with their host plants (a 2014 study).
This is an early step in this research process; more extensive research is suggested by scientists.
